  5. An image that is hauntingly beautiful. What a fascinating story. I am not well versed as to why the black Madonna is referred to as a black Madonna, but this story here certainly presents a good reason.

  6. imagine all the prayers that inhabit the soot of all those votive candles over time. this is why i love the oldest of chapels and churches...the very air stirs with the hopes and dreams of countless lifetimes.

  7. I love this figure. I had her on my blog last year. I think that she is very special. When you think of what the people of that region endured, it makes sense that her face would be deeply sad. I think that the painting took on the pain of time. Even the soot may have been a part of that.
